Paul Newman didn’t just leave his mark on American cinema–he also left it on your salad. On the shelves of most grocery stores, Newman’s Own products make organic accessible.

The line is full of pantry staples–like pretzels, cookies, candy, dried fruit, coffee, and tea–that follow USDA organic guidelines and are certified by Oregon Tilth, which means farms haven’t used pesticides in at least three years, and all the after-tax proceeds from the natural pasta sauce, dressings, lemonade, and salsa that are part of the Newman’s Own line are donated to charities across the globe.

In their own words: “Newman’s Own was supposed to be a tiny boutique operation-parchment labels on elegant wine bottles of antique glass.

We expected train wrecks along the way and got, instead, one astonishment followed by another astonishment followed by another. We flourished like weeds in the garden of Wishbone, like silver in the vaults of finance.

A lot of the time we thought we were in first gear we were really in reverse, but it didn’t seem to make any difference.

We anticipated sales of $1,200 a year and a loss, despite our gambling winnings, of $6,000. But in these twenty-six years we have earned over $300 million, which we’ve given to countless charities.

How to account for this massive success? Pure luck? Transcendental meditation? Machiavellian manipulation? Aerodynamics? High colonics? We haven’t the slightest idea.”

Newman’s Own is a food company that was founded by Paul Newman in 1982. The company makes all-natural salad dressing, pasta sauce, salsa, lemonade and steak sauce.

Newman’s Own Organics was founded in 1993 by Paul Newman’s daughter, Nell Newman, as a division of Newman’s Own.

It became a separate company in late 2000. Their motto is “Great Tasting Products That Happen to Be Organic.”

Their products include organic pretzels, cookies, popcorn, chocolate bars, peppermint cups, peanut butter cups, olive oil and vinegar, dried fruit, fair trade coffee and pet food.
