Comedy legend Stephen Fry helped to boost the total number of pledges made in support of 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s ‘Stamp out Stigma’ campaign to nearly 7,000 after he twice publicised it on social networking website Twitter within four days.
The Trust wants to educate the public about the realities of mental health problems and learning disabilities and to ask them to make a pledge not to use words that can hurt, offend and stigmatise people suffering from these complex and often distressing conditions. It is aims to secure 100,000 signatures on its petition over a 12-month period.
Stephen, famed for his roles in ‘Blackadder’ and ‘Jeeves and Wooster’, first posted a message on his profile page urging his 1.5million followers to get behind the campaign on May 14. Shortly after the message, known as a Tweet, appeared, the pledge counter went into overdrive.
“It was really exciting moment,” says Joanne Waldron, the Trust’s E-Communications Assistant. “It just goes to show the power of celebrity. We are so grateful to Stephen for taking the time out to help this really worthwhile cause.”
Stephen posted a second Tweet on May 17, thanking his followers for their support and once again asking people to pledge. As a result, the pledge counter has rocketed from 1,400 to nearly 7,000.
The QI presenter gave his backing to the campaign in advance of its launch in April. He has had a well-publicised battle with Bipolar Disorder.
